  • Why does this feel like another “voice assistant” that we’re supposed to talk to all day?

If we worked from home, maaaayyybe voice control could be a thing once it’s 100%? But Boss Man wants us back at work. Are we really going to be a open-office with everyone talking to their computer like some sort of crypto bro boiler room?

It’s sorta like the “video phone” that everyone was dying to have for decades. We finally got it and everyone went “meh”. A few grandparents use it to talk to their grandkids. Hell, most of the current generations don’t even use phones anymore.

It’s one more technology that’s being pushed out before it’s baked and will likely be only really useful in niche applications. Really fucking good for those niche applications, but just too expensive and awkward for anyone else.

  • I’m feeling this so much right now. Trying to learn FreeCAD. The interface is so unintuitive. I’m no stranger to CAD.

The program is so irregular, inconsistent… Things that should work give unintelligible errors.

Sure, it’s pre-release 0.22, but so frustrating. Their support forums are unhelpful/unfriendly at StckOverflow levels, just without the nice interface.

Save me the “but it’s free, you should contribute to it if you don’t like it. I know it’s free. I’ve donated. I’m looking for an Open solution, not another hobby.

  • Nvidia is probably making a huge sigh of relief right now. When the Crypto-Currency scam popped, they were looking at a huge inventory of graphics cards being dumped on the market. They lucked out that self-driving cars were the new shiny that kept their business growing. Now it’s AI. The AI hype-cycle is crashing fast though.

  • Big endiant is great for intellisense to quickly browse possibilities, since it groups it all in the same place.

If only someone would train a program… we could call it a Large Language Model… to knowingly group the names together so we wouldn’t have to choose between human-readable format or dB format.

Guess that will never happen because instead we’re stuck using “AI’s” to inflate stock prices instead. /s

I remember seeing a proposed language that would allow each programmer to choose what name to use for each item. Don’t like ‘open_file’? Choose to see it as ‘file_open’ every time you review the file in the future.

While we battle with each other endlessly, we keep forgetting that the computer doesn’t care.

  • It’s worse than that. “Truth” can no more reliably found by machines than it can be by humans. We’ve spent centuries of philosophy trying to figure out what is “true”. The best we’ve gotten is some concepts we’ve been able to convince a large group of people to agree to.

But even that is shaky. For a simple example, we mostly agree that bleach will kill “germs” in a petri dish. In a single announcement, we saw 40% of the American population accept as “true” that bleach would also cure them if injected straight into their veins.

We’re never going to teach machine to reason for us when we meatbags constantly change truth to be what will be profitable to some at any given moment.
