I used to live in Japan and around 50% of Japanese were sweet, friendly, welcoming and accommodating. 35% purposefully ignored or avoided me. And 15% were snide, bitter, racist, exclusionary, angry, rude assholes who can get fucked and/or need to go traveling to see that the world doesn’t revolve around them. One of the sweet ones even shouted down, literally, one of the assholes who harassed me in the subway.

Maybe you cope with the noxium of urine created amonia, the feces, the needles, the petty crime, and getting hassled and called a “fa**ot” for not having a $1 bill in San Jose, Oakland, SF, or LA but I cannot. All the well wishes are nice, and I would love love if the homeless could be put into unused office space or whatever pipedream is trendy at the time (and there have been a lot of pipedreams in my shortish life). But I want them gone, I want the worse-than-a-favela shantytowns, and I want the smell gone. I don’t really give a shit how it’s done so long as it isn’t cruel or illegal.

Rights holders change because companies go under, are sold, or liquidate their library (the movies and stuff they own or have rights to). The library is purchased by somebody else. Easy enough. But when producers, directors, actors, etc. and other studios who have partial ownership or distribution rights of the movie, things can get complicated during that library transfer.

Further complications arise when people die or they sell the rights to another person or company. Then you can have this knotted mess of home video and theater distribution rights (those can be separate and owned by different entities too!) which can culminate in lengthy lawsuits, or disinterest, conflict over money and percentages of profit, original contracts with the director/producer/actors/etc. getting in the way somehow, misplacing or destruction of film negatives (by far the worst case scenario), or straight up people not even knowing they own a movie’s rights.
